Well, here we have it. Nubia finally came up with the RedMagic 12 Pro. This is a big deal because now we can get desktop-level gaming in a much smaller form factor.

Nubia's new gaming phone brings Steam integration to mobile

How so? Well, the RedMagic 12 Pro includes support for that is built right into the phone's operating system. This means you don't need a separate console.

Specifications

  • Processor: Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6
  • Display: 6.85-inch, 185 Hz, 2,688 x 1,216 pixels
  • Battery: 8,400 mAh with 80W wired and wireless charging
  • Cooling: Fan and water cooling system
  • Water Resistance: IP69

You can just launch PC games right from your phone. This is a big deal for anyone who enjoys mobile gaming and wants to get a little more graphical fidelity in the form of a smartphone.

Powering these intense applications is the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 chip. This acts as the core engine of the phone. Nubia managed to make this chip fit into their form factor while still being powerful enough to handle intense tasks.

The RedMagic 12 Pro is only 8.5mm thick. For something with so much power, that is fairly thin.

Now for some of the specs. In order to achieve the best possible gaming experience, the phone comes equipped with a 6.85-inch screen. This screen can achieve refresh rates of 185 Hz during gaming.

Resolution for the screen is 2688 x 1216 px which will give you great visuals for those fast-paced games. For cooling purposes, RedMagic outfitted the phone with an elaborate cooling system that includes a fan and water cooling system. This will help prevent the phone from overheating and throttling during intense gaming sessions.

Moving on to the battery. The RedMagic 12 Pro sports an 8400 mAh battery that supports both 80W wired and 80W wireless fast charging. This fast dual-charging system will help you quickly recharge your phone to get back to gaming. It is also equipped with a 50 MP primary camera as well as a 50 MP ultrawide lens for regular picture taking.

There are three different global variants of the RedMagic 12 Pro to choose from. The base model (12GB/256GB) costs 949 USD (approx $949). Then there's 1049 USD (approx $1,049) and 1199 USD (approx $1,199) for higher storage variants.

These were available for pre-order globally on November 17. You can start buying the phone generally from November 18.

We've been following the RedMagic 12 Pro here at Techaeris. It's part of our line of articles on high-end mobile devices. This launch puts a new contender on the scene.

Especially since we've seen Honor Win 2 gaming phone hits and others leading the performance pack. It really solidifies Nubia's presence in the premium gaming phone market.

Steam on a phone is the only reason I care. The rest is just hardware specs.

How does the kernel handle thermal throttling with that 80W wireless charging running during play? I expect aggressive CPU scaling.

The water cooling loop likely acts as a heat spreader, but expect the fan to ramp up. Wireless charging generates significant heat, so the system will probably limit charging speed to manage thermals. It is not plug and play for heavy sessions.

I just want to know if the 8400 mAh battery lasts through a long train ride. Does it hold up?

$949 is steep for a device that is basically a handheld. I will wait for the price to drop.

maybe the fan noise will ruin the immersion tbh 🤔

Shipping to Europe means VAT will push this past $1100. The base model becomes unattractive quickly.
