On November 2nd, Manic EMU received an update to version 2.0.2. This update brought targeted improvements to 3DS emulation on the iOS platform. The update is significant as it adds new ways for iPad users to engage with the emulator via windowed modes and controller updates. Specifically, the update adds support for iPad windowed applications and enables the use of iPhone controller skins on iPads.

iOS emulator gains iPad window support and controller skin compatibility

The main emphasis of the update revolves around the Azahar emulation core that powers the emulation of 3DS games. With the update, Manic EMU can now support the use of controller skins (originally for iPhones) in iPad windowed applications. The update adds support for the use of iPhone controller skins (originally for iPhone) in iPad apps.

In addition to the changes to the main emulation core, the update features some UX and connection improvements. The developers have updated the SNES controller layout design for better usability when playing classic games. They also addressed AirPlay issues, making sure external display video output works as intended. The developers also updated the Nimbus part of Artic Base for ongoing support of Pretendo network services.

It's worth mentioning that the developers haven't provided any comparison benchmarks for the update. Without the comparative benchmarks, it's hard to tell if the updates to the Azahar emulation core provide any noticeable improvements in terms of smoother gameplay. The Manic EMU developers have not provided comparison benchmarks. So, it's not known yet if the new version of Manic EMU provides noticeably improved 3DS gameplay.

The article says iPhone controller skins now work in iPad windowed mode. Does that mean I can finally use the familiar layout on my larger screen without stretching?

Yes exactly. The Azahar core update allows those specific iPhone layouts to render correctly inside the windowed app environment on iPad.

Window support is nice but the lack of benchmarks is annoying. I have no idea if the Azahar core changes actually improve frame pacing or just fix UI glitches.

fixed the airplay issues and snes layout too 🤔

Finally some love for the iPad multitasking setup. I will definitely check battery life after this update.

I suspect the Pretendo network support update is the most critical part here for long term viability rather than the skin changes.
