We have a new utility in the tool belt for those with Steam Decks looking to make a little extra runtime on the portable. DeckyTDPTuner is a new tool to try and get extra battery life without the need to sacrifice frame rate. With handheld gaming, there's always a battle between performance and power that's being fought.
New Decky Loader tool automates TDP optimization for extended runtime
The new DeckyTDPTuner plugin is the work of sidharthify and was made available on November 1. This plugin is for those that are looking to get longer gameplay out of their games without having to manually optimize each game.
DeckyTDPTuner is a Decky Loader plugin for the Steam Deck platform. It's at version v0.0.1 and can be downloaded on GitHub. You'll be able to drop this tool into your current Decky Loader with no extra installation.
DeckyTDPTuner is all about automating the process of reducing a game's Thermal Design Power (TDP). It'll work by calculating the best power limit based on the FPS target, 5% lowest frame rates, and consistency of the game's frame pacing. The developer says it can typically do this in just a minute or two for each game for the optimization. It then stores these exact settings for each game once complete.
'Adjust live' allows for on-the-fly optimization to keep things stable while playing. The developer has designed this tool for finding that sweet spot for battery life and overall reduced power consumption without hurting performance. The amount of battery life gains will vary by game and their TDP limits.
We previously saw the last update to DeckyTDPTuner and there were a few of the same balancing and stability discussions within. DeckyTDPTuner remains a free utility for the Steam Deck community. You can hop onto this today to see if the automatic TDP changes help your gaming sessions in particular.

Does this tool save the optimized settings permanently or do I need to re-run the test every time I boot a game?
It stores the exact settings for each game once complete. You only run the optimization process once per title to find that sweet spot.
