A DIY modder has released a second version of a handheld PlayStation 4, making the unauthorized device significantly more compact than the original prototype. This update matters to hardware enthusiasts because it demonstrates that heavy console internals can fit into a portable form factor without sacrificing processing power. The modification targets the growing market for custom gaming devices while Sony develops its own official handheld console.

Modder reduces weight to 900 grams while maintaining original battery life

The new V2 unit relies on a modified PS4 Slim motherboard that the builder cut to fit the smaller chassis. The modified PS4 Slim motherboard enables the device to run standard PlayStation 4 software in a handheld form factor. The project remains a personal DIY endeavor rather than a commercial product from Sony or any third-party manufacturer.

Specifications

  • Display: 7-inch OLED, 1080p resolution
  • Battery Capacity: 5,000 mAh (6x 21,700 mAh cells)
  • Weight: 900 grams (without battery pack)
  • Cooling: GTX 750 GPU fan (external) + 30×30 internal fan
  • Base Hardware: PS4 Slim motherboard (modified)

Engineers equipped the V2 with a 7-inch OLED display that supports 1,080p resolution for clear visuals. The cooling system combines a 30×30 millimeter internal fan with an external fan salvaged from a GTX 750 graphics card. The modder confirmed that the external fan operates quietly, while the smaller internal fan generates the majority of the operational noise.

Power comes from six 21,700 mAh battery cells wired together to create a total capacity of 5,000 mAh. The device weighs 900 grams without the removable battery pack attached. Users can expect a battery life between 1.5 and 3 hours depending on the game being played. The modder stated that the V2 maintains the same performance and battery duration as the larger V1 version.

The builder has no plans to sell or commercialize this design to the general public. This decision keeps the project strictly within the realm of hobbyist experimentation and technical demonstration. Developers can track the project's progress on social media, though the creator has stated there are no plans to commercialize the design.
