GameMaker is cutting out the paid license requirement to make commercial games on most platforms from 1 January 2027. What’s the importance of this change?

Indie developers can now publish and sell games without buying a Professional license

Indie developers will no longer need to buy a Professional license to publish and sell games. This is a big change as it directly reduces the financial barrier of entry for people trying out new projects or operating on a smaller budget.

The update is being rolled out by YoYo Games via the next gen GMRT runtime environment. What does this new runtime environment offer?

With the new runtime environment developers can publish games for free on PC, Mobile, Web and the GX Games platform. This makes GameMaker a more accessible option compared to other big engines out there.

The engine now has source code available for all license tiers. This allows users to debug problems and modify the engine to suit their project needs.

Current users with Professional licenses will be able to continue selling games made in previous versions of GMS2 under these new conditions. Console releases are still restricted and need an Enterprise license.

Users need to also have approved developer status to publish to console. Releases to consoles still need an Enterprise license and approved developer status.
