Film rights to Pierce Brown's 'Red Rising' series have been acquired by Paramount, which is a huge development for one of the more-demanded sci-fi adaptations in recent memory. The fact that 'Red Rising' has been picked up is important for a couple of reasons: it means the book is now in a place where it's not just in some form of limbo during development. Instead, Paramount has picked it up and will move it into production.

And it does so with some pretty notable people to the helm. This at least gives buyers or fans of the franchise an idea of who is handling the adaptation — even if there's no release date in mind.

'The Hunger Games' films' director, Francis Lawrence, is on board to direct the 'Red Rising' adaptation. Lawrence has some experience in handling big-budget franchises as well as working in effects-heavy stories. This indicates that Paramount's goal is to have a big-budget production on par with what Lawrence has worked on in the past.

The project will see Justin Rhodes penning the script. The goal for the adaptation is to give 'Red Rising' the epic scope that Brown's books have. The story is one that has rich world-building and plenty of political intrigue. Brown is rather transparent about the fact that the standard he wants his adaptation to be in line with is the 'Lord of the Rings' trilogy that Peter Jackson directed.

Brown stressed the importance of having someone you can trust with the project, which is why he's had a long friendship with Lawrence (eight years and counting). Having this kind of relationship with Lawrence means Brown has a trusted partner in the director. The studio seems intent on making sure that this adaptation is handled with a good creative eye rather than just rushing to get it made.

There's no word yet on a premiere date or cast. For the time being, this project is just getting started with the director and writer on board. Expect a several year-window before we see this adaptation on the big screen, given the scope of the story and director's plate.
