Microsoft is forcing Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 promotional backgrounds onto Xbox consoles, overriding custom user images. Here is how to disable the setting.

CONSOLES

Microsoft's currently forcing Call of Duty Modern Warfare 4 promotional backgrounds onto Xboxes, over top of the custom images and dynamic wallpapers that people spent time and care to create. This is affecting every single user, even if they don't have the game that's being promoted. Effectively making the dashboard a billboard for a game that some people may never buy. It's a direct invasion of the personal space of the console interface and that's why Microsoft finally gave us a way to stop this.

Microsoft adds toggle to stop forced game promotions on Xbox consoles

There's a system-wide setting on by default called 'show event-themed backgrounds' that gets enabled whenever there are certain game promotions running. That setting will replace your custom user backgrounds, including dynamic themes and even uploaded photos, with promotional media for the game that's being promoted. This occurs on both the and Series S. The dashboard update is platform-wide, so it's the same on each one.

Here's how to get rid of these promotional overlays. You'll want to go to the personalization menu on your Xbox console. You'll need to find the exact setting in there for 'show event-themed backgrounds' and disable it. When you do, the dashboard will go back to showing your static or dynamic pictures that you've selected, instead of the forced-on promotional content.

This is a pretty big user experience complaint that Microsoft is fixing. People were upset that their consoles were being used for ads without their permission. Now there's a manual switch you can toggle. So for players that want the dashboard to look clean and personalized, they can just return it to how it was before, without waiting for a general change in policy.
