Apple is working on a huge foldable tablet that could change the high-end portable computing landscape. It's designed to be a middle ground between laptops and tablets that gives you a big screen that can act as a replacement to laptops for a lot of people. This is Apple trying to get in on the high-end foldable space which has so far been dominated by rivals like Huawei.
Apple is reportedly developing a large foldable tablet that could launch around 2028
The upcoming device is not a phone or even a small tablet, it's called a "foldable giant tablet." According to Chinese tipster @Kang it's taking inspiration from the likes of Huawei MateBook Fold. This could be a horizontal foldable design that turns into a big screen when opened and a small slab when folded.
The tablet's display will be 18 to 20 inches when unfolded. The foldable cover will exclusively use Corning's Gorilla Glass for durability. General Interface Solutions (GIS) will be working on the display components' backend processing. This shows just how complicated building such a big flexible screen can be.
According to analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, we can expect this tablet to hit the market around 2028. Initial shipments are estimated at 0.5-1 million units in the first year. These numbers indicate that Apple is dipping its toes into the niche market and testing the waters before going all in on mass production. If you're an early adopter type of person looking for new tech, you'll have to wait a few years for this one to hit the shelves.
