Software licensing from Nvidia might look very different for the enterprise if their team is looking at running AI agent software. The company might be looking at $2,000 a year per GPU for the software to make those agents run. The pricing could dramatically impact the cost of owning the hardware stack from Nvidia as you work to run autonomous systems. Prospective customers who are going to be running AI agents as workloads will want to know the final pricing before making long-term commitments.
New runtime licensing targets autonomous systems separate from existing suite
The license fee being contemplated by Nvidia is to run software for AI agents on their AI factory. This software is separate from their existing AI Enterprise platform. Currently, Nvidia sells their AI Enterprise software suite for $4,500 a year per GPU. This license would specifically be for the software that runs the agents – the runtime.
Jensen Huang talked about the software licensing fee during his keynote speech at GTC Berlin on October 22. He noted that software licensing would be a big focus in the future for Nvidia's business model. He specifically mentioned the $2,000 per GPU a year number as an example of the licensing for running software for agents. At the same event, Nvidia also announced OpenShell Reference Architecture to enable secure AI agent runtimes.
At this point, the numbers are still illustrative and not the final revenue projections. The exact number of GPUs that would be eligible for this software license hasn't been disclosed. Nvidia also hasn't made it clear if this $2,000 would be the final or baseline price. It's not clear how this new license would fit into the existing enterprise models.
Nvidia is considering a software licensing model for running AI agents on their hardware where it would cost around $2,000 a year per GPU. They differentiate this type of software from their general AI Enterprise offering. The actual pricing model will have a big impact on the total cost of owning the system for autonomous systems. Nvidia hasn't yet made it clear if that $2,000 number is the baseline or final price for the software license.
