Rockstar Games never released Grand Theft Auto IV natively for Android but an unofficial port makes it possible to play the Xbox 360 classic on modern handhelds. It’s an important release that brings a high-end legacy game to the world of portable gaming, which is often struggling with legacy console games. Now Android owners with the right devices can dive into the open-world criminal story without resorting to a console or PC.
Unofficial port runs legacy Xbox 360 classic on modern handhelds
The port, dubbed as LibertyRecompAndroid, doesn’t come with a native code, instead it’s a recompiled version of the original game for Xbox 360. Developer vaduur cooked this experimental port to run the legacy Xbox 360 game on modern mobile CPU. It needs a legally acquired copy of the game on Xbox 360, particularly the one with Title Update 8.
- Minimum OS: Android 10
- Minimum Processor: Snapdragon 865
- Minimum RAM: 8 GB
- Tested Resolution: 720p
- Tested Frame Rate: 30 FPS (drops to 25-29 FPS in complex scenes)
To play Grand Theft Auto IV on handhelds like Retroid Pocket 5, you’ll need a Snapdragon 865 or more powerful CPU. 8 GB RAM is minimum and the OS must be at least Android 10. Then the game can usually run at 30 FPS on 720p resolution, although the frame rate may sometimes dip to 25-29 FPS in complex scenes. You can control the game via touch or an external gamepad.
At the moment, the port has not been tested on any more powerful devices than Retroid Pocket 5. Operation of add-ons isn’t confirmed yet either. So, the performance is yet to be proven on other devices.
Keep in mind that the port is experimental. Expect some stability issues while the developer is tuning the game recompilation. It’s a proof that mid-range mobile CPUs are becoming powerful enough to run legacy high-end games.
