Capcom’s made a bold creative choice with the film version of Street Fighter which is all about future-proofing their franchise over anything else. Capcom wanted a cut from a self-mutilating scene featuring Chun-Li chopping off her finger. It’s a pretty substantial change that affects the character’s final appearance. This shows us that Capcom is looking at things differently when it comes to the future of the IP and their big screen presentation.
Capcom prioritizes character consistency over brutal storytelling in Street Fighter adaptation
The Street Fighter movie stars Callina Liang in the role of Chun-Li. She’s recently spoken to the press about what’s going on behind the scenes with the movie. Liang says that they went back and forth and tinkered with the script a number of times before they made the call.
They ended up going with a brand on Chun-Li’s arm rather than the self-mutilation. They’ve got to keep that character image consistent, after all.
She says it would have made no sense for Chun-Li to have a missing pinky finger if they end up making a whole movie series. It’s all about striking that balance with dark story but preserving the visual presentation of the video game character. The move is all about keeping that character image intact and recognizable for marketing purposes across the board and from film to film.
This isn’t the only Street Fighter movie issue though. It’s not just the character designs. We’re talking about bad box office returns and the whole future thing.
Zangief actor Olivier Richters says they had all signed up for three movies at once. That’s not been confirmed by the studio. Liang says she isn’t really happy about the way the movie ended. All of which leaves the future up in the air for a potential Street Fighter series.
