Amazon is reportedly preparing new Kindle models with user-replaceable batteries. The change is driven by an upcoming EU regulation that requires smartphones and tablets sold in the European Union from February 2027 to have batteries that can be replaced without special tools.

Firmware leak reveals battery replacement kit

References to the new functionality were found in Kindle firmware version 5.19.4 by a user on the MobileRead forum. The firmware includes a warning that appears when a third-party battery is inserted, cautioning about possible effects on performance and battery life, and also limits charging speed. Additionally, the firmware contains references to a "Battery Replacement Kit" that end users could purchase.

The current Kindle Paperwhite battery is glued but connected via cable.

The current Kindle Paperwhite battery is glued into the housing but connected with a cable, not soldered. Opening the housing is difficult without special tools. Design changes could include removable adhesive strips and a screwed back, making repairs quicker and easier. Combined with official replacement batteries, such a change could significantly extend the life of a Kindle e-reader.

The information comes from forum posts and teardown analysis. Amazon has not confirmed the plans or a release date.
