A YouTuber builds a DDR2 gaming PC with a Xeon X5460 and Titan V, achieving 44 FPS in GTA V at 4K despite significant CPU bottlenecks.

GAME PERFORMANCE

The idea of a budget gaming pc with legacy ddr2 ram and a core 2 era CPU still playing modern games, albeit with lots of sacrifices. This build demonstrates the implications of extreme components selection in 2026. For people interested in retro tech or those with budget issues, the tradeoff between cost and FPS will be very interesting.

Legacy Xeon X5460 and Titan V combo delivers playable frame rates in modern titles

Quad core Xeon X5460 CPU. Titan V graphics card. Four 2GB sticks of 800MHz DDR2 memory, for a total of 8GB ram. This brings a very interesting bottleneck of the CPU struggling to feed the super high end GPU.

Specifications

  • CPU: Quad-core Xeon X5460 (overclocked to 4GHz)
  • RAM: 8GB DDR2 (4x2GB sticks at 800MHz)
  • GPU: NVIDIA Titan V
  • Cooling: 120mm AIO liquid cooler
  • OS: Windows 10

The Xeon X5460 was overclocked to 4GHz with a 120mm AIO liquid cooler for the best performance. Windows 10 is used and there are specific benchmarks in mind to show off capabilities. The CPU is a big bottleneck, rarely going above 50% usage on the GPU in games.

This pc can play GTA 5 for example with an average of 44FPS @4k resolution. With CS:GO at 112FPS @1080p. 65FPS DOOM 2016. Crysis Remastered at 54FPS. Oblivion remastered average 28FPS.

3DMark Firestrike physics goes over 6000 points. So the CPU can handle some modern physics stuff. The motivation behind this build is the current memory shortage.

DDR2 being relatively cheap in comparison to modern memory. This is a look at the boundaries of pairing old processors with high end graphics.
