Nintendo Switch 2 jailbreak achieved on firmware 23.0.1, paving way for emulator and game file extraction

A tethered jailbreak on the Nintendo Switch 2 firmware 23.0.1 enables save modifications and an emulator, while Nintendo removes the vulnerable app.

If you're planning on getting a , it's safe to say that you'll have the capability of making modifications to bypass any security measures. The guy by the name of pepsipu has found a way to do a tethered jailbreak to the console, basically hacking past the security measures (23.0.1 firmware version). This is important as it paves the way for modifications to game data/saves. Immediately this opens up some issues with game integrity and online play.

Tethered exploit allows save modifications and emulator development

Important to know that the way this jailbreak has been done is by exploiting a specific vulnerability. This isn't a hack of the system that's permanent. When you read the source, he mentions a tethered jailbreak and not a kernel hack.

So once the system is restarted it'll be back to normal. This is only active as long as you're keeping the exploit active to be able to access the modified system.

As a measure to combat this breach, has taken down the app which had the vulnerability in their digital store. This is their way to stop others from downloading it and hacking the console with it. That's the only countermeasure they've confirmed at the moment, is the removal of the app.

Another thing that's come into play is the emulator they've been working on. It's called ounce-core and it's on GitHub. It's written in Rust.

Basically it's able to run native 64-bit files as-is (extracted directly from dumps of firmware). This is just another indicator that the architecture on the console is just becoming more and more available for devs/modders.

They seem to have gotten Deltarune game files (chapters 1-4) for the Switch 2. There are also reports that the beta stuff for FromSoftware's The Duskbloods is getting some attention by some interested parties. This is just another example of how accessible Switch 2 game data is becoming.

Similar to our last Nintendo Switch 2 update, we've been seeing themes of stability, balance, etc. Now with this security breach it's just another piece of the puzzle for this new console. The jailbreak, emulator and the game files extracted is a huge thing going on. This just really confirms that the Switch 2 is in the crosshairs for some serious system hacking.
