Onimusha: Way of the Sword is getting a technical fix thanks to hacker voices38 that will work for legitimate players. The fix is for a major bug that broke new game play for the game. This fix is a much needed stabilization update for everyone who plays a legitimate copy of the title.
voices38 patches critical startup crash in Onimusha: Way of the Sword
This problem was in the anti-tamper layer of the game. This is what Capcom uses to protect their IP. The Denuvo system is what voices38 hacked into along with Capcom's own custom protection. In his manifesto he talks about this protection software as "Mumbo-Jumbo". voices38 explained his process.
This patch fixes a specific crash that happened with the new game initialization process. This is not a patch made from the technical process of cracking the anti-tamper layers. It is a patch for the normal legitimate versions. So legitimate players don't have to use cracked versions to get this stabilization update.
This is coming on the heels of the title doing extremely well commercially in Japan. It was a sales leader over there. Many of the same balance and stabilization issues were discussed when we reported on the last Onimusha: Way of the Sword update. The technical foundation is now where it needs to be to reflect the game's commercial success with this update.
The bug report for a fatal startup crash that Capcom now has access to is solved. Hacker voices38 solved the bug while simultaneously crippling the protection schemes for the game. Now new campaigns can start without those fatal bugs causing errors.
