A fan has put up a physical memorial outside one of EA's offices in response to EA's recent decision to close BioWare and scrap the next Mass Effect game. The installation makes it clear in a visual way just how pissed off the fans are about EA's track record of buying up studios and then closing them. Longtime fans of the Mass Effect series legacy have taken to public art to express their displeasure about the closure of the studio.
Fan creates tombstone memorial for BioWare and other extinct studios
At the center of the installation are a row of tombstones, one for each studio bought up by EA that they've then gone on to shut down. These include BioWare (1995-2026) of course, but it also includes other extinct studios such as Bullfrog, Pandemic, Origin, Visceral, Maxis and Westwood. Each of these tombstones indicates the years of operation for the studio – it's almost like a timeline of EA's studio consolidation.
The memorial was started by a user called Xveers, who put up the graveyard to show the compounding effect of EA's studio closures. It's a direct response to EA announcing the closure of BioWare, which has given way to a wide-ranging fan campaign to do things like put up billboards and hold N7 Day marathons. It's even inspired graffiti to go up around EA offices, all in a bid to get EA to reverse its decision.
This fan campaign demonstrates the deep connection fans still feel for the shuttered studios. It's a testament to the creative talent and IPs that are no longer with Electronic Arts. And it seems like the fans are going to keep mounting these protest to keep the studios alive in memory, and in order to protest the closure.
