GammaOS Nano v1.4 is now available for the Anbernic RG DS, bringing a cleaner boot-to-play experience and faster DS emulation to retro handheld owners. This update matters because it removes Google Services to prioritize battery life and performance, while adding visual customization options that many users requested. Buyers who value speed and simplicity over app ecosystems will find this release directly addresses those priorities.

Patreon exclusive update adds DraStic-nano and custom themes to handheld

The operating system ships with NO Google Services as a deliberate design choice to maximize performance and battery life. GammaOS states this exclusion creates a clean boot-to-play experience that appeals to dedicated retro gaming enthusiasts. The update currently targets the Anbernic RG DS, with versions for the RG Rotate and TrimUI Brick arriving in due time.

Key technical changes include DraStic-nano, which delivers faster DS emulation and supports RetroAchievements in Softcore mode. The OS introduces three complete home themes: the DSi System Menu, PS3 XMB, and Minima. Users can also enable custom video wallpapers and an in-game overlay to enhance their setup.

Performance improvements focus primarily on NDS titles via DraStic, so 3DS games will not run significantly better. The update is currently exclusive to Patreon supporters and will go public at a later date. Known issues include a cold boot color glitch on the bottom screen and a need to unplug the battery to fix restart problems if Rocknix was previously installed.

We looked at the last GammaOS Nano update earlier while tracking handheld software developments. This release confirms the developer's commitment to performance-focused customization for specific hardware. The public release timeline remains unconfirmed, but the Patreon version is live on GitHub for immediate testing.
