Dark Souls 3 receives a path tracing and DLSS 5 overhaul via the DS3LE mod, targeting RTX 20 and 30 series GPUs for a late 2026 release.

GAME PERFORMANCE

A fan-made modification is bringing real-time path tracing to Dark Souls 3, fundamentally changing how the game renders light and shadow. This update matters because it allows players to experience the title with modern lighting standards that were impossible when the game originally launched. The project, known as DS3LE, represents a significant technical leap for the aging action RPG.

Modder Ganaboy is developing this overhaul using the same lighting engine technology seen in recent PC gaming updates. The mod integrates 5 and the NRD-SH denoiser to handle the heavy computational load. This approach aims to deliver high-fidelity visuals without requiring the most expensive hardware on the market.

The mod currently requires an installation size of approximately 3 to 4 GB. Ganaboy has already added more than 80 percent of the game's BVH structure to support ray tracing calculations. This geometry update is substantial enough that players using previous DLSS Quality settings may need to switch to Balanced mode to maintain performance.

The NRD-SH denoiser provides image quality comparable to NVIDIA Ray Reconstruction while being less demanding on RTX 20 and 30 series GPUs. ray-tracing capable GPUs are also supported, though powerful hardware remains necessary for smooth gameplay. The developer notes that online and seamless multiplayer compatibility has not been tested and cannot be confirmed at this time.

DS3LE is currently expected to release by the end of 2026, though no firm launch date has been announced. This timeline gives the developer additional time to refine the lighting engine and test multiplayer functionality. Players interested in this visual overhaul will need to wait for the final build to see if the performance claims hold up in practice.
