Ubiquiti Unveils UniFi 5G Backup for $99 to Enhance Network Reliability
ACCESSORIES

Ubiquiti has introduced the UniFi 5G Backup to provide a wireless wide area network fallback for existing gateways. The device operates as an antenna stick that mounts to walls or similar surfaces. It connects through Ethernet cables and requires Power over Ethernet support because it lacks a dedicated power connector.

New antenna stick provides reliable wireless wide area network fallback using RedCap technology

The hardware utilizes RedCap technology to prioritize reliability over raw speed. This approach delivers approximately 220 Mbps in 5G mode compared to 195 Mbps for LTE backup. The unit includes a physical SIM slot without any carrier locks. It also supports eSIM profiles for seamless network integration.

Ubiquiti partners with T-Mobile US for the American market, allowing users to operate the device using stored eSIM profiles instead of inserting physical cards. Customers can order the U5G-US model directly from the official Ubiquiti store in the United States for 99 USD.

The antenna only functions when a cloud gateway exists within the local network infrastructure. The RedCap standard targets IoT applications by implementing necessary 5G features while keeping high-speed performance secondary to consistent connectivity.

Ubiquiti has not disclosed pricing or availability details outside of the US market. The company also has not confirmed specific launch windows for other regions.
