Ubiquiti's new USW- LR- Switch- 8- PoE extends PoE to 800m but limits speed to 10Mbit/s and power to 13W at max range. Available now for $274.

Ubiquiti have introduced a USW-LR-Switch-8-PoE (630W) to offer much greater Power over Ethernet range than the standard 100m. This is primarily aimed at installers where you have large areas you wish to power devices such as security cameras remotely without having to run power. This is done by using special long range cables along with endpoint devices to negotiate the extra long-range power protocols.

Ubiquiti's new long-range PoE switch limits high-power cameras to 200m and drops data to 10Mbit/s beyond 400m

It provides 8 PoE ports along with a single dedicated uplink port which is used for the uplink to the main network backhaul. It supports Power over Ethernet standards up to PoE++. However you need compatible long-range endpoints to be able to use this as regular PoE devices won't work for the extra long-range power delivery mode.

Specifications

  • Model: USW-LR-Switch-8-PoE (630W)
  • PoE Range: Up to 800 meters
  • Port Count: 8 PoE ports + 1 uplink
  • Switching Capacity: 3.6 Gbit/s
  • Long-Range Speed: 100 Mbit/s (up to 400m), 10 Mbit/s (beyond 400m)

In long-range mode the max data speed depends a lot on how far away the device is from the switch. For example the switch will negotiate 100Mbit/s if the device is within 400m of the switch. After the 400m the max will only be 10Mbit/s. Total switch capacity remains at 3.6 Gbit/s on all ports.

Long range power output decreases dramatically as distance goes up. Using the official outdoor cable this means that the max power the device can take at the far end is 13W at 800m. So high powered devices such as AI PTZ which require 51W are limited to a 200m max. This means you need to think about your devices power requirements and how far away you are going to put them.

This is now available for 274 USD ($274). You will need to buy a few other things to be able to use this in full long range mode. For example you will need to get the required UACC-LR-Endpoint (99 USD $99.00 ea). Plus a single cable 305m outdoor (149 USD $149).

This is a nice way to get extra distance for PoE networks. However it does come with some caveats around distance and power delivery. You need to be aware of the data rate reductions and power delivery restrictions at the far end if you want to do long range installations. It's best suited for certain scenarios where standard Ethernet lines would not be practical.

This is a niche tool for specific industrial installs. The 10Mbit/s drop at 400m makes it useless for modern video surveillance beyond that point.

Is the 13W limit at 800m enough for standard PoE cameras or do you need the proprietary endpoints for anything other than the switch itself?

You need the UACC-LR-Endpoint for the long range mode. Standard PoE devices just use the standard 100m limit.
