A DIY enthusiast has created a working, portable Sony PlayStation 2, and has shown that you can take legacy console hardware and give it a modern handheld chassis. It gives retro gamers a physical way to play classic games on their own, custom device, without the need for official re-releases or any kind of emulation hardware. The build also shows that there's a way to make something with intricate inner workings work in a foldable, clamshell build.

LCLDIY combines three broken PS2 motherboards into a working clamshell handheld

Called LCLDIY, the DIYer put together the portable PlayStation 2 by using motherboards from three broken PlayStation 2 consoles. It took a ton of know-how to incorporate these elements into a smaller and more portable shell. In the end, the PlayStation 2 turned into a foldable, clamshell-style portable console similar in shape to modern handheld gaming devices.

The portable PlayStation 2 build has a folding LCD screen as its main screen for gameplay. It also features support for wireless controllers, so that you can attach a wireless controller to it for a more traditional gaming feel. The entire custom case for the portable PlayStation 2 was 3D-printed, so the inner workings are snug in the portable case.

Some of the games that work on the portable PlayStation 2 include popular titles like GTA: Vice City, God of War and Shinobi. Seeing these games working successfully shows that the modified PlayStation hardware can handle complex, original era software. The build is a proof of concept for hardware enthusiasts who want to modify their consoles.

LCLDIY has posted the accompanying PCB files and 3D printing data to Hackaday, so others can build their own. The fact that he's posting the design files means that people can take a closer look at the engineering involved in making it portable. This is an important milestone for the DIY retro gaming community.
