Sony is forcing everyone with a PS5 to update their console firmware to 14.10 in order to continue with online play. This mandatory update is in response to a major security vulnerability being exploited by hackers to circumvent the system. Failure to update will result in you not being able to access the PlayStation Network, download or play new games. Sony is forcing this update due to an exploit known as Relapse being present in older firmware versions.

Mandatory update patches Relapse exploit and blocks Overdrive piracy platform
Relapse is specifically targeting PS5s with firmware version 14.00 or lower. Hackers are able to take advantage of the vulnerability to hack the system and gain unauthorized access. This creates security issues for the system as a whole.
Sony is aware of this and has released the 14.10 system software with a fix to address this issue. They're requiring the update to ensure all users are safe from these security breaches.
Sony is also stepping in to take down the infrastructure behind the hacked consoles. It's being alleged that they've shut down the Overdrive platform used for downloading pirated games on modified PS5 consoles. This prevents a vital service for users with modified consoles. Hacked PS5 owners now run the risk of being banned permanently from the PlayStation Network.
As we've reported before, Sony is actively shutting down digital storefronts for older consoles such as the PS3 and Vita. Sony continues with this trend of controlling the ecosystem by implementing this update. Although it's not shutting down a store, it is all about security right now.
It's making sure things are as secure as possible in the moment. However, the same idea is at play here with limiting unauthorized access. It's something that you need to address quickly to keep your online functionality.
If you want full access back to your online services, you need to complete the 14.10 update. This version has a patch for the Relapse exploit, keeping your system safe from known vulnerabilities. Hacked console owners will likely face a ban as Sony cracks down on the pirated tools. If you want to stay connected to PlayStation Network on your PS5, you'll have to update to 14.10.
