Modded PS5 Runs Red Dead Redemption 2 at 60 FPS, Doubling Native Console Performance

A mod allows Red Dead Redemption 2 to run at 60 FPS on PS5, doubling the native 30 FPS performance, though it requires a firmware downgrade and increases hardware temperatures.

Red Dead Redemption 2 can now achieve double framerate on console. If you're a console player who's been waiting for that higher FPS update on PS5, then here's something that may interest you. Well, it requires tinkering with the PS5 system software.

Modded console doubles framerate while Rockstar ignores player requests

It's important because it shows how far away console players are compared to the more fluid gameplay experience on PC. Because the native PS5 version still has locked 30fps which is not very good by today's standards.

  • PS5 Frame Rate (Modded): 60 FPS
  • PS5 Frame Rate (Standard): 30 FPS
  • Mod Requirement: Older firmware version

Independent creator Vililo made a video where he shows the modded Red Dead Redemption 2. And it seems to be running smoothly at 60 FPS. You get to see the open-world gameplay and exciting gunfights without stutters.

You know how it's usually like on console. But with this mod, you get twice the visual smoothness that Rockstar Games is still to provide on console.

How does this mod work? Basically it involves downgrading PS5 to lower firmware to work around the current limitations. So it's clear how it doubles the framerate.

But there are some consequences to it. Your hardware has to work harder to reach that framerate. So when you run RDR2 at 60 FPS on PS5, your CPU and GPU temperatures go up significantly while you're playing.

Rockstar Games has yet to release a patch that would make the framerate better on console. Even though it's possible. Because for years, they have not listened to their players' pleas for a 60 FPS patch.

So console players get to enjoy the slow native performance. This is a case where even though the PC version has had high FPS for a long time. Rockstar Games simply doesn't care.

Console players can have a modded PS5 version of the game that shows that it's possible. But it has consequences that come with the system instability and heat. So for now, console players have to stick to the official 30 FPS.

Or risk ruining the integrity of the system with the modded version. Until we get an official patch from Rockstar Games.
