With the Game Boy Advance port of the original Diablo Action RPG we now have an official demake of the iconic dungeon crawler. Why does it matter to have this fanmade version? Because now you can have the whole experience in your pocket and this happens in the anniversary of Diablo reaching 30 years on December 31. This port shows that even intricate RPG games from the PC era can exist in retro portables without losing their essence.
Fans port classic RPG to retro handheld with full co-op support
What is it all about? It's basically a port of the first game developed by Blizzard Entertainment in 1996 made exclusively for the GBA console. For that, they had to redesign the menus and character screens of the game to accommodate the small screen and controls of the GBA. So, the UI works well in this port that has much lower resolution than the PC version.
- Platform: Game Boy Advance
- Co-op Support: 4-player
- Classes: 3
- Monster Types: 170
- Unique Items: 90
The game has the full library of the original version. It has 16 levels, 27 spells, 3 character classes. You can find 170 monsters and collect 90 unique items in your runs. You can play with 4-player co-op by connecting multiple GBA consoles for a party.
According to sources, this is not a demake. It's a remake. It doesn't look and feel like a different thing.
According to the developer, they were faithful to the original game in terms of mechanics and look. That means that they kept the strategy and vibe of the original game.
This port comes just at the right time as we are about to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the original game. Now you can enjoy dungeon crawling on your retro handheld or on modern devices with GBA emulators. It's a testament to the success of Action RPG games on portable platforms.
