UK has launched a free PDF guide called 'Parent’s Guide to Gaming with Confidence', designed to help families manage the complex world of gaming today. This guide is particularly relevant given the findings from research commissioned by Nintendo, which show that 68% of UK parents feel they lack full understanding of their child's gaming activities. The new guide is meant to bridge this knowledge gap, offering parents more than just warnings—it's about empowering them with tools to engage in gaming positively and safely.

Free PDF resource addresses screen time and online safety concerns

The Parent's Guide was created with the support of the Family Gaming Database, a group focused on encouraging healthy gaming practices. It touches on important issues like age ratings, online safety, screen time management, and parental controls. By bringing all this information together in one place, Nintendo aims to simplify things for parents who are often overwhelmed by the rapid changes in gaming and platforms.

The research data from the study shows how big the knowledge gap is—71% of parents said they rely on their children to explain game terms and trends. The top concerns for parents are screen time (35%), followed by inappropriate content (28%) and online safety (25%). These insights make clear that there’s a need for accessible, straightforward information beyond just gaming jargon to help families in real life.

Games journalist Ellie Gibson, one of the contributors to the guide, stressed the need for a balance between risks and rewards. She said, "There's so much focus on the risks associated with gaming. But we don't always take the time to consider the positives. Gaming can be a creative outlet, it can be social and it's a fantastic way for families to come together." This approach positions the guide as an opportunity for families to connect through gaming, not just manage it.

Dr Amanda Gummer, a child psychologist and founder of The Good Play Guide, highlighted how fast technology changes can be daunting for parents. She said, "Parents can feel overwhelmed with the pace of change. I see parents grappling to understand new games, new platforms, online trends. Often they don't have the information they need to feel confident." The guide is an effort to give parents that confidence, offering expert guidance and structured advice.

This new guide from Nintendo comes at a time when the industry is increasingly focused on promoting healthy gaming habits, especially for younger gamers. The Parent's Guide to Gaming with Confidence is a free downloadable resource for UK parents looking to set boundaries and make the most of their child's gaming experience. With practical advice on screen time and online safety, this initiative gives parents a solid foundation to work from as they navigate the world of digital gaming.
