Nintendo Patent Reveals Universal Dock for Switch and Switch 2
CONSOLES

filed a patent for a universal dock that could simplify life for owners of both the original Switch and the upcoming Switch 2. This single accessory aims to replace the need for two separate docks by automatically adjusting to the specific console connected to it. Buyers who own both generations of Nintendo's handheld console would benefit from a single hub for video, data, and power.

Patent details auto-scaling power and video for both consoles

The proposed hardware detects the connected device to tailor its performance. It supports video output up to 4K for the Switch 2, while capping the original Switch at 1080p. The dock also manages data transfer speeds, operating at USB 3.0 for the newer console and scaling back to USB 2.0 for the older model.

  • Switch 2 Video Output: 4K
  • Switch 2 USB Speed: USB 3.0
  • Switch 2 Power Delivery: 60W
  • Switch 1 Video Output: 1080p
  • Switch 1 USB Speed: USB 2.0

Power delivery and thermal management form the core of the universal design. The system adjusts power output to match the console's needs, providing up to 60W for the Switch 2 and a maximum of 18W for the original Switch. Fan speed also adapts to the thermal requirements of the attached device to maintain stability.

Nintendo published this patent application in China on July 10, 2026, following an initial filing in January 2025. The company has not confirmed any plans to manufacture or sell this specific dock. Current market alternatives include third-party modifications for Switch 2 docks selling for $70 to $100 on platforms like Etsy.
