The Super Mario Galaxy Movie crossed the $1 billion global box office mark in its tenth week of release. This milestone makes it the first film released in 2026 to reach that threshold worldwide. The achievement positions the title as a major commercial success for the video game adaptation genre.

Universal Illumination and Nintendo film crosses billion dollar threshold in tenth week of release

Universal Pictures, Illumination, and produced the feature based on the popular Nintendo franchise. Box Office Mojo reports the domestic total at $428.5 million in the United States. International markets contributed an additional $571.5 million to the global tally.

The film currently ranks as the second highest grossing video game movie of all time. It trails only the first Super Mario Bros Movie in that specific category. The combined box office for the entire franchise now stands at $2.3 billion globally.

Industry analysis places the broader animated franchise series among the nine highest grossing animated franchises ever recorded. VGC reviewers described the film as an action-packed visual spectacle with a loveable cast of characters and endless surprises for diehard fans. The same review noted that largely, the same issues from the first movie remain, notably, a threadbare plot and rocket-powered pacing leaving characters disappointingly undeveloped.

The production team continues to draw on the established success of previous entries in the series. The box office performance reinforces the commercial viability of high-profile video game adaptations for major studios.
