Valve's Steam Controller now works without the Steam client thanks to full SDL support. Back buttons, touchpads, and gyro are recognized, though some limitations remain.

SOFTWARE AND UPDATES

's Steam Controller now works without the client. The cross-platform Simple DirectMedia Layer (SDL) input library fully supports the controller's inputs. This means users can use the Steam Controller outside of Steam for the first time.

SDL support enables standalone use

SDL recognizes the Steam Controller's back buttons, touchpads, and gyro functionality. However, some limitations remain. Game Pass titles may not support SDL inputs. Advanced features still require Steam Input for full use.

The update addresses a key downside of the controller. Previously, the Steam Controller lacked support outside of Steam games. Users had to launch non-Steam games through Steam to use the controller, which did not work with Xbox Game Pass or Microsoft Store titles.

The SDL support was added via a commit on GitHub. The change was spotted by Phoronix. Valve has not commented on future updates or additional improvements for the controller.
