Game developers face a brutal financial reality where the cost of creating massive worlds often outpaces revenue. This tension defines the economics of live-service titles like Destiny 2, which have struggled to generate consistent profits despite their popularity. The issue matters because it highlights the unsustainable nature of current content production cycles for major studios.

Tim Sweeney argues AI tools could solve the content creation costs that hurt Destiny 2

Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney addressed this challenge in a post on X on June 29, 2026. He referenced a Forbes report that identified the enormous scale of content production as the primary reason Destiny 2 rarely turned a profit. Sweeney argued that the industry needs a technological breakthrough to solve this specific financial hurdle.

Sweeney suggested that artificial intelligence could be the solution to these content creation bottlenecks. He stated, "If only some sort of newfangled technology could come along and make it possible to overcome bullet point #1 and enable games like Destiny to thrive!" This comment implies that AI tools could streamline the tedious work required to maintain live-service games.

Epic is already moving in this direction with its upcoming software releases. The company announced in June 2026 that Unreal Engine 6 will integrate AI tools specifically designed to reduce tedious work in game development. While Sweeney did not address other Forbes claims about leadership cash misuse, his focus remains on the technical fix for content scaling.
