Huawei Nova 16 and Nova 16z launch with satellite messaging, big batteries

Huawei launches the Nova 16 and Nova 16z in China. Both phones feature large batteries, fast charging, BeiDou satellite messaging, and run HarmonyOS 6.1.

Huawei has officially launched two new smartphones in China: the Nova 16 and the entry-level Nova 16z. These smartphones introduce two-way BeiDou satellite messaging, high-capacity batteries, and rapid wired charging to the mid-range market.

Both phones run HarmonyOS 6.1 and share several core capabilities. They support Bluetooth 6.0, Wi-Fi 7, NFC, Star Flash connectivity, and two-way BeiDou satellite messaging. The Nova 16 adds IP65-rated dust and water resistance to its build.

The Nova 16 uses a Kirin 9010S chipset paired with a 7,000mAh battery. Its display is a 6.68-inch OLED panel with a resolution of 2800 x 1280 pixels and a 120Hz refresh rate. The camera system includes a 50MP primary sensor, a 50MP periscope telephoto lens with optical image stabilization, and a Red Maple color sensor.

The Nova 16z takes a different approach with the Kirin 8020 processor and a slightly smaller 6,000mAh battery. It features a 6.7-inch OLED screen at FHD+ resolution that also runs at 120Hz. The rear camera setup shifts to a 50MP main sensor, a 12MP telephoto portrait lens with OIS, and the same Red Maple color sensor.

Both devices support 100W wired charging. Pricing for the Nova 16 starts at 2,999 CNY (~$418) for the 256GB model, rises to 3,499 CNY (~$488) for 512GB, and reaches 3,999 CNY (~$558) for the 1TB version. The Nova 16z begins at 2,399 CNY (~$335) for 256GB and costs 2,799 CNY (~$390) for the 512GB variant.

Huawei has not shared international availability details for either device. The phones are currently available only in China, where they have been taken off covers and released to consumers.
