The GOG Galaxy client is finally getting native Linux support, freeing up Steam Deck users from the use of 3rd party launchers. This is a big update that really enhances the handheld gaming experience by making the official client fully native to run on the Steam Deck's OS. No more having to jump through hoops with the risk of not having proper cloud sync or the ability to launch the game. This new native client also improves the client's UI/UX and filtering capabilities for Windows/macOS users too!
Official support replaces unstable third-party launchers for Steam Deck users
During the GOG Showcase on November 5, 2024, we learned that not only is the GOG Galaxy client finally getting Linux support, but that it's a big overhaul to the software with many performance improvements as well. This means that the issues that users were facing with the Steam Deck having to use alternatives such as the Heroic Games launcher can finally go away. Many users were experiencing issues with sync and stability with those 3rd party solutions, which made getting to their game library a frustrating process.
The new version of the GOG Galaxy client will come out in 2027. There is a beta sign-up available for those that want to try out the new software before release. The major emphasis of this update is to ensure that it's a stable client experience in the Linux environment while still keeping it feature-consistent with existing Windows and mac clients. It will take quite a while to get to this release, which points towards the fact they're going through a pretty in-depth development process to make sure it's rock solid on the Steam Deck platform.
The last GOG Galaxy client update we looked at had some of the same balance/stability aspects that we discussed. With this new native Linux client, they're really targeting fixing all these long-term issues with official support instead of people having to work around with community solutions. The software is going to allow for seamless integration with Steam Deck OLED models (and other Linux systems). If you're looking for an easy game library experience on handhelds, keep an eye on the beta sign-up page to see what's new.

The 2027 release date feels incredibly long for a client update. Will the beta sign-up include any early builds for the Steam Deck OLED specifically?
It is a long timeline because they are rebuilding the backend. The beta will likely focus on the core sync engine first before adding the UI polish. You should sign up if you want to test the stability fixes.
Three years is too long. The Heroic launcher already works fine for most people. This is just GOG trying to regain market share on the handheld.
finally no more hacky launchers 🤔
The real story here is the kernel-level integration they are hinting at. If they fix the Wayland compositing issues that plague third-party tools, this will be huge.
Does the new client mention anything about battery optimization for the Steam Deck? I hope it runs cooler than the wine wrappers.
I am waiting for the price to drop on my library before I bother with this. GOG sales are usually the only reason I buy anything.
2027 is a joke
