Control Resonant director Mikael Kasurinen explains why Old Gods of Asgard are missing from the sequel as Remedy shifts focus to an introspective character- driven narrative.

Remedy Entertainment is adjusting the narrative direction for the upcoming Control Resonant sequel to be a more introspective character driven story, rather than the zany music driven madness of the last game. This is significant for fans anticipating the big blockbuster moments from the first game, as Remedy is consciously removing them to focus on the inner journey of the character. If you're interested in this game for the high octane action you're probably going to get something a bit more introspective and downbeat that focuses on emotional elements rather than crazy visuals.

Remedy Entertainment removes the fictional rock band to prioritize protagonist Dylan Faden

The new sequel is focused on a character named Dylan Faden and the personal narrative of that character is the driving factor behind all the creative choices for the new game. This has been confirmed by Creative Director Mikael Kasurinen, who has stated that the entire narrative structure, including villains and secondary characters, is solely focused on Dylan. This gives the developers the freedom to really focus on a tighter and more personal narrative, without the distractions of broader worldbuilding and other character dynamics.

One of the new aspects of the sequel is the lack of a fictional rock band named Old Gods of Asgard, which was the band used to provide music for Control and Alan Wake 2. This band is now just depicted as a poster in the game world, indicating a change in how the music is implemented into the narrative. Kasurinen said that they made the choice to have music setting the mood rather than defining the scene, so the band wouldn't be part of the story.

This is in line with their approach of optimizing the emotional aspects of the game by dialing things back. Kasurinen has said that they're really focused on making the emotional ride for the player be just right. Rather than trying to pack every fan favorite thing from the past into the game. Similar balance and stability themes were discussed when we covered the last Control Resonant update, indicating a similar approach to optimizing the final product.

Remedy Entertainment is offering a Control Resonant sequel that focuses on the inner struggle of Dylan Faden, instead of going for spectacle. Old Gods of Asgard has been removed from the story, in order to give a more intimate character focus to the game. This is in the hopes of a deeper emotional connection with the protagonist, rather than focusing on the external chaos.
