SOFTWARE AND UPDATES

YouTube Music is implementing a new label to signal songs that have been mostly composed using generative AI. The label is meant to help people understand if songs are made by humans or AI. It will be visible within the player. The goal is to give more transparency about audio sources.

New feature flags tracks composed primarily with generative AI

The AI label will be placed right below the song's title in the Now Playing screen. Clicking the AI label will reveal a popup that the audio has been modified or composed using AI. The AI label is designed to indicate AI composed songs and vocals. It doesn't apply to small modifications that don't fundamentally alter the song.

YouTube is partnering with various music industry partners to make the AI label system a reality. YouTube is also employing their own AI detection methods to help detect AI composed songs. But, YouTube hasn't disclosed the accuracy of their AI detection capabilities. That creates uncertainty about the accuracy of the detection system.

There are plans to eventually add such labels to the main YouTube app as well. The planned expansion indicates an attempt to control AI composed content. The roll-out is limited to their music streaming service right now. People can now clearly see if AI has been used to create the song.
