Qualcomm is weighing a shift in manufacturing strategy for its upcoming Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 processor that could alter the supply chain for high-end mobile chips. This potential move matters to buyers because it may affect the availability and cost of next-generation smartphones and handheld gaming devices. The company is exploring the use of Samsung's 2nm process node alongside its traditional partner, TSMC, to mitigate capacity constraints.

Qualcomm weighs Samsung 2nm for standard chips as TSMC capacity tightens

The Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 is scheduled to debut at Qualcomm's Snapdragon Summit, which will take place from September 22 to 24 in Hawaii. Qualcomm currently faces limited wafer capacity from TSMC due to high demand from major clients including Apple, , and . This bottleneck has prompted the chipmaker to seek alternative manufacturing options for its latest flagship silicon.

Samsung's 2nm gate-all-around technology has seen significant yield improvements, climbing past 70 percent earlier this year. This progress narrows the gap with TSMC, which maintains yields in the 80 to 90 percent range for the same node. Industry reports indicate that Qualcomm is holding serious discussions with Samsung regarding the use of this process for the new chip series.

Speculation suggests that standard configurations of the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 might shift to Samsung, while the absolute highest-end Extreme versions would likely remain with TSMC. Pricing negotiations remain a significant hurdle, as Samsung has raised prices on older nodes and does not offer discounts for modest production volumes. Neither Qualcomm nor Samsung has publicly commented on these ongoing discussions.

We looked at the last Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 update, where several of the same balance and stability themes came up. The final manufacturing decision will depend on successful price negotiations and yield consistency. Qualcomm is expected to confirm the specific foundry arrangements when it presents the chip in Hawaii later this month.
