07th Expansion is bringing the dark atmosphere of its visual novel franchise to the mahjong table with a new remaster. This release matters to fans who want to experience the series' signature tension in a competitive card game format. The project adds a new layer of gameplay to an existing IP rather than introducing a completely new universe.
Dark visual novel franchise adapts to competitive mahjong table
The title is Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Jong Remaster. It builds on two-player Japanese Riichi Mahjong mechanics. The game carries the supervision of original creator Ryukishi07. This ensures the tone remains consistent with the source material that defined the series.
Players can choose from three distinct game modes. Oyashiro Mode offers high-stakes matches for experienced players. Club Mode provides a relaxed environment for learning the rules. Club Mode Extra unlocks additional cutscenes through the Paikuzushi Chapter.
The game features a unique narrative twist where players fight killer anime girls in life-or-death matches. This design choice integrates the horror elements of the original story directly into the gameplay loop. The remaster aims to preserve the eerie mood while adapting it for a tabletop strategy format.
Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Jong Remaster is scheduled for release in Japan in 2027. It will launch on Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, and PC via Steam. There is currently no official confirmation regarding an English release for Western audiences.
We look forward to seeing how the series translates its visual novel roots into a competitive format. The 2027 window gives developers time to refine the balance between strategy and narrative integration. Fans of the franchise will have to wait to see if the localization follows the original games.
