Double Fine Productions has reclaimed full intellectual property and publishing rights for Psychonauts 2, Keeper, and Kiln after separating from Microsoft's Xbox division. This shift matters because the studio now keeps the direct revenue from these titles instead of sharing it with a publisher. Buyers who purchase these games will now support the development studio directly rather than contributing to a corporate revenue pool.

Studio keeps direct revenue from major titles

The studio previously cut 23 employees to sustain operations during the transition period away from Microsoft. Tim Schafer confirmed that the transfer of intellectual property has returned to Double Fine. He noted that while some storefronts still list Microsoft as the publisher, the legal process is simply taking time to update.

Double Fine will now receive direct revenue from Psychonauts 2, Keeper, and Kiln without the previous revenue share model with Xbox. This financial change allows the studio to fund its operations independently. The studio is also preparing a Kickstarter campaign for Amnesia Fortnight 2026 to fund future indie projects.

and other digital storefronts have not yet updated their publisher listings to reflect Double Fine as the publisher. Schafer explained that it takes time for all the account transfers to process across different platforms. We looked at the broader industry shift in publisher-studio relationships earlier while tracking these corporate changes.

The studio has regained control of its major titles and is moving toward independent funding models. The direct revenue stream from existing sales will now sustain Double Fine's operations without corporate intermediaries.
