Apple Watch Series 12 Rumored to Feature Scratch-Resistant Ceramic Case

Lena Fischer 2 min read

Apple Watch Series 12 may feature a ceramic case variant for better scratch resistance, following trends from previous generations.

Apple is reportedly preparing a new material option for the upcoming Apple Watch Series 12 that could change how users protect their devices. A ceramic case variant would offer significantly better scratch resistance than the standard metal options currently available. This potential change addresses a common durability concern for daily wear, potentially reducing the need for protective screen protectors or cases.

New material aims to improve scratch resistance for daily wear

The new ceramic construction targets users who want a premium finish that withstands daily abrasion. Leaks from collector Kosutami_Ito indicate that Apple plans to introduce this material in the next generation of its smartwatch. The move follows a similar strategy used in previous generations to differentiate high-end models from standard aluminum or stainless steel versions.

Ceramic cases provide superior scratch resistance compared to stainless steel or titanium. Independent testing by Ben's Watch Club shows that metal watches get scratched much more quickly than ceramic ones. The material choice aims to keep the watch face looking new for longer periods under normal use conditions.

The ceramic variant will likely follow the weight profile of the Apple Watch Series 5 ceramic model. That previous version weighed 39.7 grams for the 40mm size and 46.7 grams for the 44mm size. Rumors suggest the Series 12 may maintain similar dimensions while offering improved durability for active users.

Market observers assume the ceramic version will be significantly more expensive than standard models. This pricing trend mirrors the Apple Watch Series 5 where ceramic cases carried a higher price tag. Bloomberg editor Mark Gurman has not yet confirmed whether this specific variant will release this year.

Previous ceramic Apple Watch releases have been examined to track material trends in wearables. The confirmed facts center on the material choice and its durability benefits. Consumers are advised to wait for official confirmation regarding the release timeline and final pricing before making purchasing decisions.
