Microsoft increases Xbox Series X and S prices in Europe and Japan by up to €200, giving Sony's PS5 a significant price advantage in the console market.

Microsoft raised the price of and Series S consoles across Europe, the UK, and Japan starting August 1, 2026. This increase shifts the cost of entry for next-generation gaming hardware higher for consumers in these regions. Buyers should expect to pay significantly more for the same hardware configurations that were available earlier this year.

Microsoft raises console costs by up to €200 amid component shortages

The price hike affects all current Xbox models, including the digital-only Series S and the disc-equipped Series X. Microsoft attributes this change to broader industry pressures, specifically shortages in storage and memory components driven by AI demand. The company did not announce new hardware features alongside the pricing update.

In Europe, the 512 GB model now costs €499.99, a €150 increase from its previous price. The 1 TB version of the Series S rose by €200 to €599.99. Both Xbox Series X variants also saw a €200 jump, with the digital 1 TB model reaching €749.99 and the disc version hitting €799.99.

Japan experienced the most uniform impact, with a flat increase of ¥30,000 applied to Xbox consoles. The UK market also saw rises, with costs climbing between £130 and £170 depending on the specific model. These regional adjustments reflect the global supply chain challenges affecting console manufacturers.

The price increase gives Sony's a notable competitive advantage in the current market. Reports indicate that Sony has secured sufficient memory supplies to last through March 2027, allowing for more stable pricing. This inventory advantage means PS5 consoles are reportedly around $150 cheaper than comparable Xbox models.

Some reports suggest Microsoft continues to lose approximately $150 per unit sold despite the higher retail prices. This financial detail remains unconfirmed by Microsoft and is based on industry reports. The price hike does not appear to have resolved the underlying cost structure for the hardware.
