Infinity Ward released a server-side patch for the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 early access beta on August 22, directly addressing player concerns about weapon balance and audio cues. This update matters because it reduces the effectiveness of the previously dominant Frangible Rounds ammo type and lowers the detection range for enemy footsteps. Players who relied on these mechanics for quick engagements will need to adjust their tactics immediately. The changes aim to create a more balanced competitive environment across all platforms.
Infinity Ward reduces weapon damage and audio detection ranges
The patch targets specific weapons and audio systems in the beta. Infinity Ward reduced the Frangible Rounds slow duration by 26.8% and the slow magnitude by 21.4%. This nerf limits the time enemies remain vulnerable to follow-up shots. The ISO Nightshade submachine gun also received adjustments, with its maximum damage range shrinking from 10.5 meters to 10.1 meters and its headshot multiplier dropping from 1.4 to 1.3. These changes make the ISO Nightshade less effective at medium ranges.
- Frangible Rounds Slow Duration: Reduced by 26.8%
- Frangible Rounds Slow Magnitude: Reduced by 21.4%
- ISO Nightshade Max Damage Range: 0–10.5m → 0–10.1m
- ISO Nightshade Headshot Multiplier: 1.4 → 1.3
- Oris 8.6 Max Damage Range: 0–23.6m → 0–20.8m
Other weapon adjustments include changes to the Oris 8.6 Marksman Rifle. Its maximum damage range decreased from 23.6 meters to 20.8 meters, and its head damage multiplier was reduced from 1.7x to 1.6x. The developer also increased the throw interval for the Razor throwable. Audio changes affect gameplay awareness by reducing the distance and volume at which enemy footstep and gear sounds can be heard. This makes stealth approaches more viable and reduces the advantage of hearing enemies from far away.
Beyond weapon and audio tweaks, the patch includes bug fixes for the Mobility Course, audio glitches, and disconnect issues. The beta remains available to everyone starting next week on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, PC, and Switch 2. We looked at the last Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 update earlier while tracking NVIDIA launches, and several of the same balance and stability themes came up. This update continues that trend by focusing on core gameplay mechanics.
The patch represents a significant step in balancing the early access beta. It addresses specific weapon dominance and audio imbalance issues that affected player experience. The beta will continue to evolve with these changes in place. Players can expect further adjustments as the beta progresses.
