Microsoft is changing how Xbox Cloud Gaming works by introducing a free, ad-supported tier for streaming games. This shift matters because it opens cloud gaming to users who cannot afford a subscription or lack high-end hardware. The move allows players to access their existing game libraries without a monthly fee, provided they are willing to watch advertisements.

Microsoft expands access to older devices through limited preview program

The service is currently in a testing phase available only to Xbox Insiders enrolled in the preview program. Users can stream games they already own directly through the cloud platform. This feature targets older devices such as smartphones, tablets, and low-spec personal computers that might otherwise struggle with local gaming demands.

Each streaming session is strictly capped at one hour. Users must watch an advertisement before starting each new session to continue playing. The core gameplay experience remains unchanged once the ad concludes, ensuring that the ad breaks do not interfere with the actual game mechanics.

Xbox has stated that the ads are designed to add value rather than interrupt gameplay. The advertisements must meet specific quality standards set by the company. This configuration aims to make cloud gaming accessible on a wider range of devices while maintaining a baseline user experience.

Microsoft is testing this ad-supported model to expand access to its cloud gaming infrastructure. The test allows users to stream select games from their library for free. Sessions remain limited to one hour, and the service is currently restricted to Xbox Insiders in preview programs.
