SOFTWARE AND UPDATES

Google has officially announced Wear OS 7, a major software update for its smartwatch platform. The company revealed the new operating system on May 28, 2026. This release marks a significant shift in the foundation of the wearable software stack.

New widgets, live updates, and workout tracking arrive later this year

Wear OS 7 is built directly on Android 17. This underlying change allows for deeper integration with modern Android features. Google also introduced Gemini Intelligence as the new AI assistant for smartwatches. The system will support new Wear Widgets with 2×1 and 2×2 layout options.

The update promises tangible improvements for existing users. Smartwatches upgrading from Wear OS 6 to Wear OS 7 can deliver up to 10 percent better battery life. Google added a Live Updates feature to display real-time information such as ETAs and scores. AppFunctions now allow Gemini to control apps via voice commands. The update also includes a built-in Wear Workout Tracker and improved media controls.

Wear OS 7 will power upcoming smartwatches launching later this year. The rollout covers a global release window. However, Google has not confirmed which specific smartwatch models will support Gemini Intelligence. The company only stated that select devices will receive this feature.

Google has not confirmed the launch window for specific hardware partners. The company did not disclose pricing for the software update or compatible devices. Details regarding the exact list of supported smartwatches remain unclear.
