The Division 2 just went free-to-play on consoles and PC, giving new players immediate access to the game's core experience until September 28. This limited-time offer coincides with the launch of the Red Moon Rising update, which brings significant changes to the PvE Dark Zone. Players can now join the fray without purchasing the base game, allowing them to test the new seasonal content and balance adjustments firsthand.

New players access Red Moon Rising event before paywall returns
Ubisoft deployed the Red Moon Rising update, designated as Patch 2.37 and Y8S3.1, on September 24. The update reshapes the Dark Zone experience by introducing Black Tusk forces and altering SHD tech mechanics for agents entering the PvE area. The developer described the shift in a direct statement: 'A red moon has risen over the Dark Zone, and the Black Tusk have taken control. During Red Moon Rising, Agents entering the PvE Dark Zone will face Black Tusk forces while dealing with strange alterations to their SHD tech.'
The update introduces two new Exotic items for players to acquire during the event. Vertigo, a GR9 weapon, and Sarru, an Exotic backpack, are now available as event rewards. These additions provide fresh options for character builds and loot runs. The event itself runs from September 24 through November 3, giving players ample time to hunt for these rare items.
Beyond new loot, the patch addresses gameplay balance and stability across platforms. Ubisoft adjusted Prototype Augments, Gear Set bonuses, talents, and Exotics in the PvP mode to refine competitive play. The team also resolved several bugs related to weapon talents, gear set interactions, and connectivity issues on Xbox. These fixes aim to reduce friction for players engaging in both PvE and PvP activities.
The free-to-play window closes on September 28, after which players will need to purchase the game to continue. The Red Moon Rising event remains active until November 3, but access to the base game and its evolving content will require a paid copy. This transition marks the end of the initial free trial period and the start of the long-term seasonal content cycle.
