Starboard is a new software tool that brings the PortMaster game library to Android handhelds. This release matters because it allows users to run a wide range of -based games directly on their mobile devices without needing to root their phones. The app creates a genuine Linux execution environment using proot and a Debian container, bridging the gap between Android hardware and PC-style gaming libraries.

The application targets Android handhelds and functions as a bridge to the PortMaster catalog. It supports a variety of runtime environments including SDL1, SDL2, OpenGL, GLES, GameMaker, and Xash3D for Half-Life. Users can install the app from GitHub or the dedicated website without administrative privileges. The developer, JeodC, confirmed that the app is closed-source but contains no suspicious telemetry beyond an optional ANDROID_ID for feedback.

  • Platform Support: Android handhelds
  • Dual Screen Support: Companion UI on second screen, primary screen for gamepad control
  • GPU Acceleration: Experimental OpenGL via virgl (Adreno and friends)
  • ES-DE Integration: Ports register into EmulationStation DE with cover art and descriptions
  • Runtime Support: SDL1, SDL2, OpenGL, GLES, GameMaker (gmloader/YoYo runner), Xash3D (Half-Life)

Technical features include dual-screen support where a companion UI renders on a second display while the primary screen handles gamepad control. The app integrates with EmulationStation DE, allowing installed ports to register with cover art and descriptions. An experimental GPU acceleration switch routes OpenGL through the device’s actual GPU via virgl instead of relying on software rendering. This option is available for Adreno and similar graphics chips.

Not every title in the PortMaster catalog is currently available through Starboard because some games require runtimes that are not yet enabled by default. The tool prioritizes compatibility with existing Linux ports rather than adding new emulation cores. Users seeking to expand their handheld gaming library on Android can now access these titles without complex manual configuration. The app remains in an early stage with limited runtime support.
