AYN has enabled REG Linux on its original Odin handhelds, giving owners of older hardware a fresh way to play retro games. This update matters because it offers a lighter, higher-performance alternative to the previously standard Batocera Linux environment. Users with the Snapdragon 845 models can now access this custom firmware without waiting for new device releases.
Snapdragon 845 handhelds gain lighter firmware via fastboot
The software targets the Odin Base and Odin Pro models, which both rely on the Snapdragon 845 processor. REG Linux functions as a drop-in replacement for existing Linux distributions, aiming to improve system responsiveness. The announcement came directly through the official AYN Discord channel, signaling the company's endorsement of the community project.
- Processor: Snapdragon 845
- Supported Models: Odin Base and Pro (SD845), specifically Odin M0 model
- Software Version: REG Linux Ver. 7.2.8
Owners must install version 7.2.8 of the REG Linux firmware to proceed. The process involves flashing an .elf file using the fastboot utility on a computer. This method requires some technical comfort, as it replaces the existing operating system rather than adding a layer on top. The update is currently limited to the specific Odin M0 model configuration.
The new firmware does not yet include support for HDMI output or Samba network shares. These missing features mean the device is best suited for portable play on its built-in screen. We mentioned the last AYN Odin update when we covered previous balance and stability themes, but this release focuses on raw performance gains. The update is available now for those willing to flash their devices.
