Cloud Imperium Games has pushed the release of Squadron 42 back to the second quarter of 2027. This delay removes the game from direct competition with Rockstar Games' upcoming Grand Theft Auto 6. Players who have funded the project for over a decade now face another extended wait before the single-player campaign launches.

Developer cites market saturation concerns for the shift

The shift in schedule stems from developer Chris Roberts' desire to avoid the market saturation surrounding GTA 6. Rockstar Games has set a November 19, 2026 launch date for its title on and |S. Roberts stated that launching Squadron 42 during that period would place it in the attention buzz saw of the competing franchise.

Squadron 42 reached a feature complete state in 2023, marking a significant milestone in its twelve-year development cycle. The project relies on crowdfunding from the Star Citizen community, which has now surpassed the $1 billion mark. This financial backing continues to support the final polish and testing phases required for the delayed release window.

A limited number of original Star Citizen backers and longtime content creators will gain early access to the game. These select players can test the build on October 9 and 10. Cloud Imperium plans to use this feedback to announce a specific release date shortly after these sessions conclude.
