A high school student has released a free web browser port of Half-Life 2, allowing players to access the classic shooter directly through their internet browser. This project allows players to access the game through a web browser without requiring local installation or high-end hardware. Players can now test the game on both desktop and mobile devices without purchasing or downloading the original software.

Fan project allows instant access without local installation

The project was created by a developer known as slqnt, who built the entire browser-based version over a three-month period. The game is currently hosted on the slqnt website, where users can launch the experience immediately upon visiting the page. The fan-made port preserves the original gameplay by adapting the game engine to function within standard web browsers.

The browser version has gained significant attention, with many players testing the port on various devices to verify its performance. While the game runs on mobile browsers, the experience is limited by the lack of physical controls. Players attempting to use the game on smartphones or tablets must connect an external keyboard to navigate the game effectively, as touch controls alone are insufficient for the full gameplay experience.

The developer continues to release bug fixes and updates to improve the reliability of the browser port. These ongoing adjustments aim to address technical issues that arise during gameplay and ensure a smoother experience for users. The project illustrates how classic PC games can be successfully adapted for modern web environments through community development.
