Valve's composer Mike Morasky brought up an unreleased game called HLX in the midst of a discussion on HDR at GameSoundCon. This little blurb has helped fuel excitement for an actual announcement, as fans have been hoping and waiting for years to get the next entry in the Half-Life series. This blurb suggests progress is being made but it doesn't give any indication as to when we could see a launch.
Valve composer Mike Morasky mentions HLX game at GameSoundCon
Though currently being referred to as HLX, this may or may not be the final retail title of the game. Dataminer Tyler McVicker reported a good news update for the game in fall 2025. Back in November of last year, Morasky nearly blurted out the title for the game during an interview but was cut off by a coworker whispering about the NDAs.
A complex physics system and NPCs that are influenced by AI are rumored to be a part of the game. Supposedly a complex physics system and AI influenced NPCs are rumored to be in the works for the game. The fact that they didn't include HLX in the launch lineup for the Steam Machine (which launched in late June) tells us that the game isn't quite ready for immediate retail release just yet.
So when can we expect the game to release? Well, it's not quite clear that this blurb by Morasky means we're about to hear something about a launch of Half-Life 3. When it comes to release date, it's not clear but it seems to suggest work is still being done, just not immediately.
As we've written about before, there have been a number of teasers from Valve in the past that have fueled Half-Life 3 rumors leading up to Summer Game Fest. But other hints, like the launch of the Steam Machine in late June, did not include HLX in the launch lineup. But now we've got Valve's composer Mike Morasky bringing up the game during a conference that's got excitement growing again for an announcement.
