Funcom is laying off some staff and re-organizing their leadership team in the wake of CEO Rui Casais' resignation. This restructuring is aimed at improving Funcom's financial situation in the wake of Dune: Awakening's lukewarm reception. Players and investors should be mindful of the impact this could have on Dune: Awakening's future support and development direction.
Funcom restructures leadership and cuts staff despite million-copy sales
Funcom is laying off some staff in the wake of Dune: Awakening reaching 1 million copies sold in its first two weeks. While the game has proven to be commercially successful so far, Funcom notes that development costs have been a huge drain on the budget. They'll still be providing support for Dune: Awakening as well as Conan Exiles, but will be taking steps to save money.
The new CEO will be Scott Junior, the former Product Director and Executive Producer for Dune: Awakening. With his familiarity in the company and the game, he'll be able to navigate the ship through the downsizing. Despite the decrease in manpower, Funcom says they'll continue running their flagship games.
Since launch, Dune: Awakening has seen a dip in player interest. Reviewers have pointed out lingering issues with PvP as well. These issues with gameplay have played a role in Funcom's choice to reorganize their resources. We've previously covered Dune: Awakening PS5 Physical Edition Announced, and saw the continued efforts to bring the game to more platforms.
