DLSS 5 Modder Update Yields Only 2% RTX 50 Series Boost

A modder updated DLSS 5 to support NVFP4, but tests on RTX 50 series cards show only a 1- 2% performance increase over standard FP8 modes.

DLSS 5 Modder Update Yields Only 2% RTX 50 Series Boost
GAME PERFORMANCE

Modders have tweaked 's 5 renderer to run on a faster data format, but the performance boost is minimal for RTX 50 series owners. This experiment matters because it reveals the gap between theoretical efficiency gains and actual gaming speed on current hardware. PC gamers looking for a free performance bump from this specific mod should expect only marginal improvements.

OptiScaler v0.7.2 hybrid model shows minimal gains over default FP8

The update comes from modder wilsjo2, who released OptiScaler version 0.7.2. This tool allows users to run NVIDIA's DLSS 5 neural renderer with a hybrid format that combines FP8 and NVFP4 data types. The modification targets Blackwell architecture GPUs, which are the foundation of the RTX 50 series.

  • OptiScaler Version: 0.7.2
  • Baldur's Gate 3 FPS (Hybrid NVFP4/FP8): 55.16 FPS
  • Baldur's Gate 3 FPS (FP8 Only): 54.57 FPS
  • Performance Improvement: 1% to 2%

NVFP4 is a new 4-bit floating-point format designed to use less memory and compute power than standard FP8 or BF16 formats. Despite this lower resource requirement, the hybrid model in version 0.7.2 only increased performance by 1% to 2% in tests. The modder changed the recommended setting to the hybrid model for Blackwell GPUs in this specific release.

Benchmarks in Baldur's Gate 3 showed the hybrid model achieving 55.16 FPS compared to 54.57 FPS for the default FP8-only mode. NVIDIA has hinted that official DLSS 5 models will eventually support NVFP4, but current modding requires manual model retraining for full optimization. We looked at the last DLSS 5 update while tracking these performance trends.
