Capcom has clarified how the Resident Evil franchise sustains itself in an era where releasing a brand new entry every year proves too demanding for the development team. The company relies on remakes of older titles to maintain a steady annual release schedule while generating the capital needed for other projects. This strategy allows the studio to balance the workload of its core horror series with the ambitious scope of new intellectual property.

Producer explains how remakes fund new IPs and annual releases

Producer Masachika Kawata explained in an interview with Game Informer that revisiting established games helps the studio meet its goal of releasing a Resident Evil title each year. He noted that this approach allows the team to continually challenge their craft without the immense pressure of building a new world from scratch every twelve months. The studio views these remakes as just as important as mainline entries in the series.

The financial resources generated by these remakes directly fund the development of new entries in the Resident Evil series and completely new IPs like Pragmata. Capcom is currently prioritizing Resident Evil Requiem and upcoming remakes, which means the team has no available resources for spin-off projects like Resistance or Umbrella Corps. This resource allocation ensures that the studio can focus its efforts on high-quality releases rather than spreading its team too thin across multiple parallel projects.

Looking ahead, Capcom has confirmed that a remake of Resident Evil: Veronica is scheduled for release in 2027. This future project fits into the studio's broader strategy of using established IP to fund its creative ambitions.
